Child Marriage in Vietnam: Evidence from Existing Data

Vu Manh Loi

Abstract: Using existing secondary data, the analysis presented in this paper shows that some frequency of child marriage is observed in all provinces/cities. It is particularly high in ethnic minority communities and in provinces with a large number of ethnic minorities in northern mountainous, central highlands, some central provinces and in the Mekong Delta. Child marriage occurs more often in provinces/cities where the level of human development measured by HDI is low, and where the level of gender equality measured by GDI is low. The provinces/cities where the child marriage rate for females is high are also provinces/cities where the child marriage rate for males is high. Premarital sex and unwanted adolescent pregnancy are becoming more and more common, which are also important factors indirectly affecting the prevalence of child marriage.
